Exodus Week 1

Key Scripture
Exodus 2:5-10

Context
God has made a covenant (promise) to Abram, now Abraham, back in Genesis 12 and 15. A piece of this promise was that Abraham’s descendants would be as numerous as the stars in the sky. Abraham’s descendants become known as the Israelite people and as we open up the book of Exodus, they are enslaved in Egypt. Even more so, the leader of Egypt makes a decree to have all of the firstborn Israelite males killed. This is an impossibly difficult and seemingly hopeless situation for the Israelites. However, a glimmer of hope in this situation is the birth of Moses. When Moses was just a baby, his mother out of fear for his life puts him in a reed basket and floats him down the Nile River in faith that God will take care of him. The Pharaohs daughter pulls Moses out of the river and takes him in. By the grace of God over the next few years, Moses grows up in the household of Pharoah and becomes very powerful and prominent in Egypt.

As we dive back into Exodus 2, we read it with a perspective that even though things seemed hopeless, God was working behind the scenes for our good and His glory. As He was raising up Moses to eventually deliver the Israelites from the slavery they faced, we are reminded of Jesus. The one who delivers us from the spiritual slavery we faced. As he hung on a cross and things looked hopeless, He was in the process of saving humanity.

Application
We often face seemingly hopeless situations in our lives. These sometime look like facing bullying every day, wrestling with mental health, or even just a struggle to fit on. No matter what it looks like in our life, we can trust that God sees us, hears our cries, and He is working in our lives even when we cannot see it. When we struggle to have hope in our lives, we should be reminded of Jesus’ death on the cross and the hope he offered us of eternal life through His sacrifice.

Questions for your student
Hope is a belief that something better is coming, what situations are you in that you struggle to believe will get better?

How can you remind yourself in these moments that God is with you, even when it doesn’t feel like it? He sees you and He hears you!

Take a moment and pray, thank God for the hope of heaven that He has offered us through the death and resurrection of Jesus. We have a future with no more pain, hurting or tears with Him in heaven. (Revelation 21:4).
